Archie Ferguson grows up in New York in the turbulent 1960s. Or rather, he grows up four times, because Paul Auster tells of strokes of fate that steer Archie's young life in different directions. The book deals with a thought that comes to mind at some point in our lives: what would happen if life had been different? It's about different realities that take place in parallel. Other hobbies, other love relationships, other moments of happiness, other bereavements and tragedies. In the background of the story, the world is changing: Cold War and nuclear deterrence, JFK and grief of an entire nation, Muhammad Ali and the war in Vietnam, civil rights movement and terror in the southern states. And Archie grows up in the middle of it all.
