Daisy Darker, a book that absolutely could not live up to its reputation

Nayezi aus NRW am 06.05.2023

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Daisy Darker, a book that absolutely could not live up to its reputation. Firstly, the author has a good writing style and especially her metaphors and comparisons have impressed me. The story itself, however, not so much. The book was very dragged out and I personally could live without some of the flashbacks to the past. In addition, one of the sisters always sang "Mockingbird" by Eminem in the 1980s, which is a nice song, but only published in 2005 and thus does not fit there at all, especially since the story itself takes place in 2004. It is a pity but for me personally the book absolutely could not pick me up, which is why I would not recommend it to others.

Deadly Secrets

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

This murder mystery is about nine people who all have skeletons in their closets – some figuratively, some literally - and desperately try not to become one themselves. For her 80th birthday, the Darker family reunites in Seaglass, Nana’s crumbling old house on a tiny tidal island. Every family member harbors secrets they’d rather not think about, let alone share with anyone else. But when the clock strikes midnight and they start dropping like flies, with no way off the island or means to call for help, they are forced to relive everything they wanted to forget. Since I was blown away by Alice Feeney’s „His & Hers“, I simply coudn’t not read this book. I have to be honest, though, this one was way harder for me to get into. It took me a month to finish – which is quite a long time for me – but in the end it was worth it. „Daisy Darker“ reads like a classic murder mystery and thus isn’t as fast-paced as I would have liked it to be. The frequent flashbacks to Daisy’s childhood and youth further interrupt the flow of the story and made it hard for me to stay invested. On top of that, the characters are just awful human beings. They are annoying, entitled and manipulative, which makes it hard to feel sympathetic towards them. I never thought I would say this, but everything I hated about this book, everything I struggled with, is ultimately why it ended up being so amazing. The author, once again, came up with an outstanding twist to the story that not only tied up every loose end perfectly, but also came as such a surprise that I am still not quite over it. If you are a fan of crime novels and haven’t done so already, I strongly suggest you give one of Alice Feeney’s books a go. This particular book, I’d especially recommend to every fan of muder mysteries á la „And then there were none“ by Agatha Christie.
