Meine letzte Rezension Daughter of Smoke and Bone von Laini Taylor
Laini Taylor has mastered the ability of writing beautiful prose and "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" is the perfect example. Admittedly, it was my first read by the author, but I immediately fell in love not only with her writing style, but also the characters and world(s) she created. We follow seventeen-year-old Karou, a seemingly normal art student living in Prague who, however, harbors a secret: She regularly runs shady errands for a chimaera who adopted her when she was just a child. When she has a life-changing encounter with an angel during one of those errands, Karou soon finds herself torn between two worlds – all while discovering her true self on the way. "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" literally has everything you want: a star-crossed love, captivating plot twists, and – I cannot stress this enough – one of the most magical settings I’ve ever come across in a YA book (or any fantasy, really).

    Fantastisches Worldbuilding im Stil von "Dune" trifft auf das Römische Reich: Mit "The Will of the Many" liefert James Islington – meiner Meinung nach – eines der besten Fantasybücher der letzten Jahre.

    Der Weg der Könige

    Auf Brandon Sandersons Homepage schreibt er selbst: "I’ve been asked to introduce The Way Of Kings to you. And I have no idea how to start." So ähnlich ging es mir beim Schreiben dieser Rezension. Ich kann nur sagen: Manchmal gibt es einfach Bücher, die man nach dem ersten Lesen nicht mehr vergessen kann, weil sie SO gut sind. "Der Weg der Könige" ist für mich das perfekte Beispiel dafür. Sanderson hat es tatsächlich geschafft, eine fantastische Welt mitsamt Charakteren zu erschaffen, in die ich mich Hals über Kopf verliebt habe und das trotz – oder gerade wegen – all ihrer individuellen Macken. Wer zudem nicht auf komplexes Worldbuilding und einen unvorhersehbaren, stets spannenden Plot verzichten möchte, wird an diesem Fantasy-Epos wohl kaum vorbeikommen.

    Blood Over Bright Haven

    M.L. Wang's "Blood Over Bright Haven" is truly a remarkable standalone fantasy book which I absolutely devoured. We follow Sciona, who strives to be the first woman to ever get admitted to the High Magistry. In Tiran, a city surrounded by magical barriers to keep it safe from so-called "Blight", highmages are looked upon and respected. But Sciona faces more than just a few challenges climbing up the social ladder in Tiran, and she finds herself teaming up with Thomil, a Kwen janitor at the Magistry who has his very own heartbreaking story to unpack. Although this summary doesn't do the book any justice, "Blood Over Bright Haven" features a well-written and innovative magic system and is in its deepest roots a tragic story with a very powerful message. It actually reminded me a bit of "Babel" by R.F. Kuang. So, if you're into this sort of dark academia, this book might be for you!

    Lonely Castle in the Mirror – Roman

    "Lonely Castle in the Mirror" ist für mich ein ganz besonderer Roman, denn Mizuki Tsujimura greift hier wichtige Themen wie Mobbing und Depressionen bei Jugendlichen auf und verpackt diese in ein modernes Märchen. Emotional, aber zugleich hoffnungsvoll, erzählt die Autorin von der 13-jährigen Kokoro, die sich nichts sehnlicher wünscht, als verstanden zu werden. Als sich ihr eines Tages eine neue Welt erschließt und sie die Chance erhält, sich einen einzigen Wunsch erfüllen zu lassen, schöpft sie endlich wieder Hoffnung. Ein Roman über die wundersame Kraft von Freundschaft, der berührt und nach dem Lesen noch lange im Gedächtnis bleibt. Mein persönliches Jahreshighlight!

But Essun isn't ordinary in any way – she is one of few people who have the magical ability to move earth and thus, stop the world from ending... if she doesn't decide to wreak havoc herself. "The Fifth Season" is an epic fantasy tale unlike anything I’ve ever read before and a compelling story that tackles the question to what length one is willing to go for a loved one.

    Sunrise on the Reaping

    As a self-proclaimed Hunger Games fan since the early beginnings of this book series, reading "Sunrise on the Reaping" felt like coming home. I’ve always thought that Haymitch deserved his own book considering the depth of his character (of which we got a glimpse in the original trilogy), and Suzanne Collins delivered it perfectly like she always does. Just be prepared to experience all kinds of emotions, and don’t forget to get your tissues ready for the 50th Hunger Games!
