Ich habe das Buch in einer älteren deutschen Fassung gelesen.
Diese Geschichte nimmt uns mit auf eine kleine Farm im Irokesenland, zwischen den Ausläufern des Ozark-Gebirges und dem Illinois-Fluss. Dort lebt der 14-jährige Jeremy mit seiner Familie, tobt mit seinem Hund über Felder und Wiesen und genießt den Sommer, nicht ahnend welch großes Abenteuer und welch schwere Entscheidung auf ihn warten.
Die Erzählung spielt lange vor unserer Zeit und sowohl die Protagonisten als auch der Schreibstil scheinen aus der Zeit gefallen zu sein. Dennoch enthält das Buch auch heute noch eine gültige Botschaft für seine Leser bereit: andere Menschen glücklich zu machen, macht selbst glücklich oder auch geben ist seliger denn nehmen. Diese Erkenntnis reift auch in Jeremy. Seine Erlebnisse mit den Affen haben mich immer wieder zum Schmunzeln gebracht, aber am Ende hat mich seine Entscheidung, die ihm sichtlich schwergefallen ist, zu Tränen gerührt. Der sorglose Jugendliche entwuchs in diesem Sommer seinen kurzen Hosen.
Ein zu Beginn heiterer Roman mit einem berührenden Ende.
