She is the author of Out of the Woodpile: Black Characters in Crime and Detective Fiction (Greenwood, 1991) and co-author of Law Never Here: A Social History of African American Responses to Crime and Justice (Praeger, 1999).

MICHELLE BROWN is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ohio University.
