„The Beach“ ist ein fesselnder Roman, der die Illusion eines perfekten Paradieses gekonnt dekonstruiert.
Die Geschichte dreht sich um Richard, einen selbsternannten Reisenden, der etwas jenseits des gewöhnlichen Tourismus sucht. Er entdeckt einen geheimnisvollen, unberührten Strand, der wie ein Paradies erscheint. Doch schnell wird klar, dass dieses Paradies nicht so perfekt ist, wie es zunächst scheint, da externe Kräfte die fragile soziale Ordnung bedrohen.
Alex Garland schafft es meisterhaft, den Leser in Richards Abenteuer einzutauchen. Die Beschreibungen sind so lebendig, dass man fast selbst in Thailand bei den Protagonisten ist.
