Sons and Lovers is one of the landmark novels of the twentieth century. This intensely autobiographical novel recounts the story of Paul Morel, a young artist growing to manhood in a British working-class family rife with conflict. The author's vivid evocation of the all-consuming nature of possessive love and sexual attraction makes this one of his most powerful novels.

Die Liebesheirat von Gertrude Coppard, der Tochter aus gutem Hause, und dem Minenarbeiter Walter Moral entwickelt sich alsbald zu einem erbitterten Machtkampf um die Führungsrolle innerhalb der Familie und um die Liebe der Söhne. Dank ihrer intellektuellen Überlegenheit gelingt es Gertrude, sich durchzusetzen, die Kinder an sich zu binden und den Vater als das Andere, das männlich Animalische, ins Abseits zu drängen. Der Verlust des Vaters als Autoritäts- und Identifikationsfigur führt zu einer ödipalen Bindung der Söhne an die Mutter, die für explosiven Sprengstoff innerhalb des Familiengefüges sorgt und emotional-sexuelle Beziehungen der Söhne zu anderen Frauen zu Rivalitätskonflikten stilisiert. "Sons and Lovers" ist eine packende Erzählung, eine Gratwanderung an den psychoanalytischen Grenzen zum Krankhaften. Der englische Text ist durchaus anspruchsvoll geschrieben und vor allem der Dialekt der Minenarbeiter stellt für Einsteiger sicherlich eine Herausforderung dar.
