A very nuanced and empathetic portrait of a girl looking for meaning, friendship and love. I couldn't put the novel down and recommended it to many of my friends.

I don't know how she did it, but Emma Cline somehow managed to tell the brutal Charles Manson cult story while maintaining a comforting, fun and even nostalgic atmosphere throughout the whole book. It's such a cool and original idea to write about the Manson drama from the perspective of a young girl falling in love with an older girl from the cult instead of the cult leader. Also, the Southern Californian desert setting makes for a perfect, thrilling summer reading. Enjoy!
