This thesis describes the design of digital filters for audio signal processing for the filter categories frequency selective, noise shaping, equalization and effect through the application of nonlinear (semi-infinite) optimization on the resulting filter design problems. The design tasks particular to filters for audio signal processing result from the incorporation of special requirements enforced by the consideration of psycho-acoustics without (significant) simplifications or supplementing tools in addition to (electro-) technical requirements. These special requirements originate, for example, from the behaviour of the ear as a spectrum analyzer with nonlinearities in the frequency mapping and the perception of loudness. The application of methods for mathematical optimization to solve these tasks, and the potential advantage drawn from their usage, is shown in comparison to the application of special methods designed for the solution of one or some few filter design tasks. The benefits through the application of methods for mathematical optimization are prevalent when approximating more or less smooth magnitude responses, e.g. for pink noise filters, abstract design goals like those in filter design tasks for psycho-acoustical noise shaping, the simultaneous consideration of complex filter requirements as shown for equalizing decimation filters and lastly for the user by allowing a uniform description of design tasks without requiring detailed knowledge about solvers.
