Nach "Mind Games" war ich wahnsinnig gespannt auf das neue Buch von Teri Terry. Ich mag den Schreibstil der Autorin und wusste bei dem Klapptext nicht so richtig was mich erwartet. Die Geschichte lässt sich in den Bereich Mysterie und Jugendthriller einordnen, dabei beginnt die Story ganz harmlos. Der Leser wechselt zischen den Perspektiven von Quinn und Piper und erlebt so das erste Aufeinandertreffen der beiden Schwestern. Der Perspektivwechsel ist auch zugleich die Kapiteleinteilung. Diese können aus mehreren Seiten bestehen oder aus wenigen Sätzen. Die Geschichte umweht schon von Anfang an etwas mystisches. Man merkt, dass beide Schwestern ein Geheimnis mit sich herum tragen und ahnt eigentlich schon sehr früh worum es sich dabei handeln könnte. Dennoch gibt es die große Auflösung mit einigen Überraschungen erst am Schluss. Quinn und Piper ähneln sich zwar wie ein Ei dem anderen, aber charakterlich könnten sie nicht unterschiedlicher sein. Diese Darstellung ist der Autorin auch wahnsinnig gut gelungen. Ich wusste auch ohne nachzusehen immer wer gerade erzählt und fand beide Charakter auf ihre eigene Art passend und faszinierend. Aufgrund des sehr flüssigen Schreibstils fliegt man nahezu durch das Buch und kann es nur schwer zur Seite legen. Geschickt verwebt die Autorin mystische Elemente mit der Realität und schafft so einen konstanten Spannungsbogen. Leider hatte das Buch ein paar kleine Durststrecken die mich haben stocken lassen und mir unnötig für die Geschichte schienen. Mein Fazit Trotz kleiner Schwachstellen ist "Book of Lies" ein fesselnder und packender Jugenthriller, der mit einem sehr gut gelungenen Verwirrspiel versteht zu begeistern. Das Buch sorgt mit einem locker leichten Schreibstil und einer spannenden Story für ein kurzweiliges Lesevergnügen. Ich bin ein Fan der Autorin und werde es auch definitiv bleiben.

Creepy and scary but oddly fascinating

When I was a child I loved stories containing twins meeting after being separated since birth, especially the part where they switched places and paraded as the other wrecking a lot of havoc along the way. Lighthearted stories that make you laugh about their wickedness. There is nothing lighthearted about this book, that's for sure. Piper and Quinn's first meeting sets something in motion that is a far cry away from innocent mischief. The story gets more and more sinister, scary, creepy and even bloody the further you read. The dark atmosphere created makes you shiver, the whole thing very fitting for Halloween. I was a bit confused most of the time because it's all so mysterious. You hardly get any answers and have to wait almost until the very end in order to grasp what the hell is happening with all the creepy dreams, the role of dogs in the story, the lies, deceptions, the secrets withheld in the Blackwood family, the truth behind their mother's death. There is a lot in the past to dig up. In the end, it all makes sense and you can see how great the idea is as a whole. It just takes some time to get there and untangle things. I liked how big a role lies play in this book, how dangerous they turn out to be. It makes you question not only the character's motives, makes you doubt their good intentions, but your very own behaviour as well. To lie or not to lie? Sometimes a lie seems kinder than the truth. Well, a bad taste remains, the fear of the lie being discovered one day, the corresponding consequences. Will they be worse than having told the truth in the first place? In this book, more honesty might have prevented things turning into disaster, as would have coming forth with crucial information instead of withholding it. The sisters would have been more prepared. But they are teens, rebellious; the outcome might have been the same or even worse. We will never know, but I like the speculating that goes on even after being finished with the story. Another aspect I liked was the whole good sister and bad sister thing that turned out to be not quite so black and white like it seems at first, although I knew pretty quickly which sister I liked more. I only wish I could have emotionally connected with the characters more. They seemed to keep their distance from me, not letting me get in too deeply. All in all, the book is full of surprises, although of the dark kind. If you are looking for something to cheer you up, well, it might not work so well for you. There is a lot of secrets and lies to wade through. You get the creeps quite often in form of sinister and sometimes bloody dreams. It's different and creepy but fascinating as well. Just see for yourself.
