If you seek to find out more about the evolution of animals and plants, then David Attenborough is the author to look for. He takes the reader with him on a journey around the world, so vividly written as if you were there with him. The author takes all the different species into focus, from the day they emerged and how they evolved to the variety we know today. The scientific aspects fit in nicely, a well-placed addition and because the author doesn’t linger on that scientific wave it is far from boring. Just enough to understand the fundamentals, conveyed understandably. I had the opportunity to get this book as audio because I at present knew the author’s voice from his documentaries on tv. And I have always liked his approach to various topics. His way of reading is by all means the same as on tv, I was mesmerized from the start. It was even pleasant to hear some birds singing or insects chirping at the beginning of every new chapter. We primarily recognize all the distinct species living on earth, on land, and in the water but we don’t know from what creatures they descended. David Attenborough fills those gaps and shows us how those animals have learned to adapt their form to any change or need. And many of those do this in a surprising way as if it were the easiest way to do it. It must be amazing being present when a caterpillar goes into metamorphosis and turns into a butterfly. After completing the last chapter I am sure that we humans could definitely learn a lot from those animals. Would we be able to change as easily as they do? I recommend this book to everyone interested in animals and their evolutionary journey.
