Dieses ellenlange Buch, das offenbar von Verlegern aufgrund der Unterlagen des Schriftstellers zusammengestellt wurde, enthält eine minimale Handlung, worin Eugene Gant, ein junger Absolvent von Harward beschrieben wird, der nach einer kurzen Zeit als Lehrer in New York divese Länder wie England, und vor allem Frankreich ohne festes Ziel bereist. Es wird immer über Flüsse berichtet und die Nacht übt eine Faszination für Eugene aus. In diesem Buch, das ich nicht als Roman bezeichnen könnte, wird ausführich philosophiert und man möchte auch einmal wissen, was Eugene als nächstes getan hat. Wenn man "Look homeward, angel" als einer der grossen Romane der frühen Amerikanischen Schriftsteller ansehen kann, ist der zweite ein ganz schwaches Buch geworden.
