The Best Laid Plans

Cameron Lund's debut "The Best Laid Plans" is a rom-com for young adults that centers around losing one's virginity. Keely Collins is the only girl in her immediate group of friends, and probably the whole senior class, who is still a virgin. Feeling left out and wanting to finally know what the fuss is all about, Keely decides to take the matter into her own hands. But she doesn't want to sleep with just anybody, but someone who she can trust. And who does she trust more than her best friend Andrew? But will he agree to her odd plan? And if so, will their friendship ever be the same again? I have read lots of YA novels and, of course, there are many that include having one's first time. As far as I can remember, I've never read one that is quite as dedicated to the topic as "The Best Laid Plans", though. In my opinion, Cameron Lund does a great job of showing how big of a milestone having sex is to most teens and how different it is handled by various people. Even though I have to point out that there are some quite questionable scenes surrounding the topic (f.e. double standards, slut shaming etc.), it's overall a rather sex-positive story. Apart from the main topic, the storylines surrounding everyday high school life and friendships are quite entertaining as well. I recommend "The Best Laid Plans" to teens aged 14 and up, who are looking for something sweet, funny, open and sex-positive.
