A masterpiece of Historic fiction

Bewertung aus Gammertingen am 13.01.2021

Bewertungsnummer: 1380015

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

The latest volume of Thomas Kydd novels really is a new highlight of the series. Apart from the highest tension from the first to the last page, this book is also characterised by excellent descriptions of the world historical and social historical context. Both the desolate conditions at the court of King Ferdinand III and the problems of the Danube Monarchy are described in a pointed and convincing way. In addition, the difficult social conditions in rural Sicily in the early 19th century are described, for example in the village of Altofonte. Incidentally, these continue there even today, albeit in a mitigated form. Also outstanding is the masterly nautical appreciation of the situation in the Adriatic Sea including the special weather conditions (Bora) and the topographical descriptions of the island of Lissa (today Otok Vis), which I know from my own sailing experience. Of course, in this book, too, different plot flows are again interwoven in a virtuoso manner and lead to a magnificent climax in the end. Already today one can look forward with impatience to the next volume of the series. Highest compliments to the great author Julian Stockwin!
