A Rainy Day in New York

Fooling around sexually with children is and should not be allowed/acceptable and therefor it should be punished/treated, though one should also remember the fact, that in justice anybody is considered as not guilty, till he or she is proven guilty. Why this statement? At the same time this movie came out, accusations about sexual misconduct of its maker reappeared in the news. This time hell broke loose over Mr. Allen. Several artists deplored their cooperation with the movie director, one of the main characters (Chalamet) not only felt sorry for his participation in the movie, but also decided to donate his earnings from his participation in the making of the film to charity. Mr. Allen has - up to this day - denied the accusations by his adopted daughter and his ex-partner (Mia Farrow). A legal trial decided in his favor. As far as I am concerned, Mr. Allen has the benefit of the doubt. So let’s go back to his movie itself. A romantic comedy and again a brilliant piece of work, with which Woody Allen as usual not only ridicules the neuroticism of American society, but also makes an interesting statement about himself. The story is about two college students, Gatsby and Ashleigh. Gatsby is the son from a family of the NYC upper middle class, a card player and he could be a runaway from 'The Catcher in the Rye'. Ashleigh (not Ashley) is the daughter of a rich Arizona bankers family. The two make a weekend trip to Manhattan, where Ashleigh is going to interview a film celebrity for her college newspaper. Gatsby in the meantime walks through Manhattan and meets old friends, one of them making a movie for an arts-exam. This director in spe, a straight look-a-like of Allen himself(!) in younger years, is in fact the only emotional and rational stable character in the movie up till that moment and at the same time he is the inducer of the real story of the film, which is a tale about ‘what is a healthy decision in life and what is a healthy relationship’. In the end the right decision wins, though the main character first has to learn his lesson. A good story, again beautifully filmed, with smart, partly hilarious one-liners, only Woody Allen can think of. Apart from that, a great choice of music (for which Allen is also known), this time with lots of tunes by Erroll Garner.

Die wunderschöne New Yorker Atmosphäre und die Liebesgeschichte in diesem Film kommen real und authentisch rüber und sorgen dafür, dass ich diesen Film immer und immer wieder schauen könnte!
