Not American Enough, Yet Too American

„I square my shoulders. Take a few easy breaths. Remind myself pressure is okay. It’s how diamonds are made.“ As a Japanese American, Izumi has always felt like she didn’t quite fit in. So, when out of the blue, she learns that she is the illegitimate daughter auf the Japanese crown prince, she is hopeful to finally find her place in the world. Izumi travels halfway across the globe to meet her dad and discover the country of her ancestors. But being a princess isn’t all that easy, especially when you have to deal with conniving cousins and a bodyguard who makes your heart beat faster. Many say that „Tokyo Ever After“ is a cross between „The Princess Diaries“ and „Crazy Rich Asians“ and I have to admit that I’ve rarely heard something described quite as perfectly. Izumi is a very likeable, smart and outspoken protagonist and it’s easy to get wrapped up in her quest. I love that her mom, who is just amazing, doesn’t try to hold her back, but rather encourages her to find herself. Also, her group of friends and their dynamic is great. Even though, they are halfway across the world, they give Izumi all the support she needs and also offer some comic relief. Romantics will also adore the love story in this book, it really is very cute. This book has even more to offer than a fun story and wonderful characters, though, it also lets you learn about Japan. I am not particularly familiar with the Japanese cuisine, culture or customs, so it was very interesting for me to learn more about those things. All in all, „Tokyo Ever After“ is a wonderful book about a young girl trying to find her place in the world and I think that’s something that everybody can relate to.

It was really good!

When you love „Princess Dairies“ or something like that mixed with Asian romance, this is really good. I really liked the characters and their relationships. I just wished there would be more moments of Akio and Izumi
