Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky also acted as a playwright (comedy "On fur coats", historical drama "Marusya Bohuslavka", "In Smoke and in Flames" (1875), etc.), ethnographer-folklorist ("Worldview of the Ukrainian People from Ancient to modern times" (1868-1871), "Ukrainian humorists and plasterers" (1890)) and linguist ("Modern periodical language in Ukraine" (1907); "Grammar of the Ukrainian language" in 2 parts (1914 year) etc.).
He entered the history of Ukrainian literature as an outstanding master of artistic prose. Having created a number of highly artistic social and everyday stories and novels, depicting in them the difficult life of the Ukrainian people in the second half of the 19th century, showing the life of the peasantry and laborers driven by poverty from their native villages to factories and fisheries, I. Nechuy-Levytskyi introduced new themes into Ukrainian literature and motifs, painted them with bright artistic means. Unlike his predecessors - Kvitka-Osnovianenko and Mark Vovchko, he elaborated characters in more detail, covered social life more fully, showed his heroes in sharp collisions with social conditions. In the post-reform period, social relations became more complicated, and new conflicts arose between the main strata of the population. The development of capitalism, the proletarianization of the peasantry that filled the cities led to the emergence of a new type of proletarianized peasant and the new social conditions of his life in the city. In a word, new conditions required the emergence of new types and genres that could more deeply and accurately cover all the complexity and variety of manifestations of contemporary life.
