Brutes 'Haunting.' NYLON

ever since reading this book i’ve been looking for another that captures the kind of surrealism i love so dearly so well. it captured the confusion of being a teenage girl figuring life out in such a clever way.

This was a really atmospheric read with well written and interesting characters. Throughout the novel you get different points of view alternately to the story getting told by the collective “we”. Altogether an enjoyable read with unreliable narrators and much room for your own imagination.

The plot is completely contrived – it feels like the author was inventing the story as she wrote. The language is very figurative, packed with metaphors and comparisons, but the level of introspection it presents would never realistically come from a teenager, as the book claims. It’s very clear that it was written by an adult trying to aestheticize her own youth. The whole ‘we’ language comes off as pretentious and becomes grating after a while. All in all felt so pretentious
