Joined in the early hours by his granddaughter, he gradually opens up to her and recounts another hidden story, this time of his own marriage. After she falls asleep, he at last finds the courage to revisit the trauma of Titus's death. Passionate and shocking, political and personal: Man in the Dark is a novel that reflects the consequences of 9/11, that forces us to confront the blackness of night even as it celebrates the existence of ordinary joys in a world capable of the most grotesque violence.

"Man in the dark" ist so ein Buch, welches manch einen verstimmen wird. Denn anders als es der Text auf dem Buchrücken suggeriert, ist nicht der Plot über das veränderte Amerika im Vordergrund, sondern tatsächlich der alte Mann im Dunkeln, sowie seine Beziehung zu den einzelnen Familienmitgliedern. Besonders gegen Ende wird einen das mehr und mehr faszinieren, mit überwältigen und auch teils düsteren Szenen niederreißen. Jedoch... - Vorsicht Spoiler! - ...wird die besagte Verstimmung dann eintreten, wenn die zweite Geschichte einfach aus dem Nichts mit dem Tod des Protagonisten dort endet. Das ist im Rahmen der Erzählweise einfach nur konsequent, aber eben, wie gesagt, auch unbefriedigend. Dennoch: Sehr zu empfehlen!

Leicht zu lesen und einfach zu verstehen ist dieses Buch. Die Geschichte selbst ist genial in sich selbst verschlungen und des Sinn liegt nicht oberflächig und offen sondern versteckt im Hintergrund.
