Rezension

An unsettling novel about the ultimate unknowability of your spouse and a sure-footed addition to a canon that might include Jane Eyre and Gone Girl . . . Gripping reading Sunday Times

“More generally, the idea that my husband existed before meeting me is surreal, even revolting.”

Bewertungsnummer: 2185180

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Sometimes being delulu is not the solulu. We follow our unnamed protagonist every day of the week. From Monday to Sunday, we take a dip into her obsessive mind and get to analyze her psyche. We learn about the different colors she associates with the weekdays and the rituals that come with them - some more unhinged than others. Every move of hers is carefully curated to please her husband and in return, she’s pleased with herself. Proud of the fact that he is oblivious to what she is doing, she has no other passion, than being in love with him. She has no other purpose than being his wife. I am also obsessed. Not to the degree our main character is, but I absolutely devoured this book. The wife depicted in this novel is the product of her environment. Always seen as less than due to her economic background, her education and job and especially her gender. Always trying to fit into the mold society formed for women. But what really made it such a thought provoking piece was the epilogue. I’ve read the last few pages with my jaw on the ground.
