While I appreciated Earth, I didn’t find it as compelling as the first book, Water. Part of the reason may be the misogyny, which, as a woman, made me have visceral reactions. I also struggled to relate to the main character, Evan. I felt like the story could have benefited from a few more pages to truly flesh him out beyond just his traumas. That being said, one of the book’s strongest aspects was its stark and painfully accurate portrayal of the injustices women face in rape cases. The depiction of the legal system’s failings was aggravatingly realistic, making it an important read for those interested in legal injustice and courtroom dramas. The prose was excellent, and I would still recommend it for that. However, I strongly advise checking the trigger warnings (rape, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, homophobia, misogyny) before diving in. I will definitely continue the series!
