Dostoyevsky's second published work, The Double, is a surprisingly modern hallucinatory nightmare in which a timid government official named Golyadkin becomes aware of a mysterious doppelgänger, an unsettling mirror of himself who embodies all the traits Golyadkin lacks: confidence, charm, and a complete disregard for societal norms. As his double gradually and ruthlessly begins to displace him with his friends and colleagues, Golyadkin finds his social, romantic and professional life entering a downward spiral that drives him into paranoia and finds him facing a relentless battle against his own identity.
