”How to Survive a Horror Movie” is exactly what it says it is: a horror movie in book form. A teen slasher movie, to be exact. With all the right ingredients: an eerie atmosphere, an island you can’t leave, a group of mean girls, a love interest and a protagonist who is the only person who believes there’s a connection between the “suicides” of three of her classmates. And decides to investigate their deaths and unmask the killer – literally. Yes, some of it is ridiculous, some of it is cringy, some of it is predictable but ”How to Survive a Horror Movie” is actually a quite entertaining read. I didn’t expect to enjoy it that much but I had a lot of fun with the book. And I think it would work perfectly as a movie – so Scarlett Dunmore did everything right. I also liked the reveal of the killer and enjoyed the plot twist that came after that. Also, the very last scene? Yup, quite stereotypical, but it made me smile. The only thing I couldn’t really connect to was the horror movie references. I am not an avid horror fan, so I have heard many of the titles that Charley and Olive threw around before but have only watched a few of them. So, I think someone who is into that genre might enjoy that part more than I did.
