I just love horror stories! Especially those that explore family dynamics, the lives of first- and second-generation immigrants and generational trauma. Like She Is a Haunting, What Hunger moves between the present and the past, showing how family history can shape the current generation. And oh boy, I did not expect to read so much horror involving cannibalism this year . But this is far more than a gory story; it’s about grief, family, history and trauma. Even first-time or non-horror readers will be surprised by how the horror is tied not just to scares/shock moments, but to raw/real emotions. What Hunger is both gut-wrenching horror and a tender meditation on culture and family. Ronny, the main character, endures immense hardship, yet she is fierce and resilient. This is a deeply moving, thrilling and unforgettable read.
