This book is as important as it is necessary to question. First and foremost: It’s NOT a tech deep dive or anything like that and that’s exactly why it matters so much. With AI integrating its way into education, healthcare, and global decision making, Hao shifts the conversation away from code and into what really counts: power, bias, and who gets to define our future. “AI is not going to cure cancer.” Hao is a journalist with a background in comp science, which is essential if you’re going to drag this industry for filth. And drag she does! She exposes the ridiculous God complex festering in Silicon Valley. Where guys like Sam Altman operate like untouchable figures (iykyk), emotionally flat, and obsessed with control. It’s less about innovation, more about ego (and money). She unpacks how AI reinforces racism, classism, and gender stereotypes, not just in the West, but globally. How these systems are trained on biased data, often stolen from the Global South, then sold back as “objective” intelligence. It's exploitation disguised as progress. Not to mention the enviromental impact and how this industry spoon feeds toxic masculinity. AI amplifies sexist biases by design (also read Asma Derja's "AI Was Build by Men for Men"). She doesn’t tiptoe around the misogyny baked into these models. From sexist algorithms to AI chatbots modeled on submissive, flirty women, the book makes it clear that this tech isn’t neutral. It reflects the values of the people who build it and who would've thought? Those people are overwhelmingly male, rich, and white with the emotional depth of a squeaky duck **shocked pikachu face**. Sometimes, yeah, the critique leans heavy and not every accusation feels entirely fair. Take it with a grain of salt. But the core argument stands: the way we build and use AI right now is broken, undemocratic, and emotionally bankrupt. I’m not anti AI and neither is Hao. She talks about how it can be done. But the way things are now need to change and need to be built with care, by people who actually give two cents. Not by tech bros who flinch at feelings and don't care about ethics. Because these individuals are safe. They are so safe, that they don't have to worry about aaanything since no one will hold them accountable. They operate in a gray area that shields them. "It's not a bug, it's a feature." And these dudes move like they're gods of innovation. We should not give them that power. This book is a bold confrontation. One that is NEEDED, and one of which we should see more of. Everyone who is able to read this review has most likely come into contact with AI, willingly or not, and should definitely be aware of what is going on behind the scenes.
