Love Letters to a Serial Killer Cosmo's Thriller of the Year 2024 - 'dark, witty and so original' (Sarah Pinborough)

Zu Beginn war ich etwas unsicher, ob die Geschichte überhaupt ausbaufähig ist und nicht den zu erwartenden Verlauf nimmt. Tatsächlich wurde es von Seite zu Seite spannender und enthüllte immer mehr Details, wodurch man selber versuchte das Puzzle zusammenzusetzen. Die Hauptcharakterin ist realistisch beschrieben und man kann sich an einigen Stellen gut in sie hineinversetzen. Dazu regt das Buch zum Denken an und der Leser hinterfragt, ab wann etwas moralisch fragwürdig ist und ob es mit dem eigenen ethischen Gedankengut übereinstimmt.

Hannah, unzufrieden mit ihrem Leben, findet in einem Internet-Forum ein neues Hobby: True Crime. Zusammen mit anderen versucht sie den Mord an vier Frauen aufzudecken. Als der Anwalt William verhaftet wird fängt sie aus Wut - und Faszination - an, ihm Briefe ins Gefängnis zu schreiben. Und er antwortet … Man war die ganze Zeit gespannt was als Nächstes passiert und hat sich die gleiche Frage gestellt wie Hannah: Ist William vielleicht unschuldig? Und will man das überhaupt? Manchmal wollte man Hannah schütteln, weil sie so naiv an die Sache rangegangen ist. Ich hatte schon früh eine Vermutung, die sich später auch bestätigt hat, was die Geschichte aber nicht weniger spannend gemacht hat. Das Ende war etwas schnell abgehandelt, trotzdem würde ich das Buch auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen. Der Einblick in die True-Crime Obsession und die Sympathien für Häftlinge waren dabei auch super interessant, gerade in Hinblick auf die Geschehnisse in der „realen Welt“.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Extremely disappointed — frustrating characters and a terrible ending I usually try to keep an open mind, but Love Letters to a Serial Killer was a major letdown for me. The main female character, Hannah, was unbelievably annoying and made so many reckless, selfish choices that ruined the story’s flow and my connection to the plot. I found myself wanting to shake some sense into her because of how frustrating her behavior was. William, who I actually cared about, got such a disappointing and poorly handled ending that it left me feeling cheated. The whole story felt like it promised a thrilling mystery but ended abruptly with very little closure. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this book if you want well-developed characters and a satisfying conclusion.

[SPOILER ALERT] Summarised in a sentence, this book is about a millennial who idealises a serial killer and has a fantasy about being one of the victims. It seems like a very bad and very cringe rewriting/fan fiction of Twilight (which is referenced) or a novel about a Taylor Swift song (also referenced). In any case all the characters are as flat as pancakes and they don't have any type of constructive discussions. All the M/F relationships are based on sexual attraction or the possibility of it.. The main character is Hannah, a lost millennial, with no real aspirations until she becomes 'someone' by being the girlfriend of the allegedly serial killer William. There are many inconsistencies throughout the book, starting with... Why did she write a return address to her first 'hate' letter? I gave it two stars because I somehow got through it despite the "rolling eyes & I want to throw this book away" cliffhanger moments at the end of the chapters, where Hannah somehow acknowledges her arousal for being another potential victim. If the whole thing would have been written as a confession, I think it would have had more potential. Maybe.
