In the first book of the Series „Marked“ Zoey Redbird, up till then an ordinary school girl, was marked by a vampire tracker to become a vampire. As a vampire fledgling she has to join the nearest „House of Night“ or vampire finishing school to complete the change to adult vampire. In the House of Night Zoey finds friends, but also enemies in other students. She is gifted by Nyx, goddess of Night and vampires, with control of the elements, becomes a priestess in training and leader of the Dark Daughters. The second installment of the Series "Betrayed" continues the story. When her old human school mates are stalked and killed and her human almost ex-boyfriend is abducted Zoey realises that she is the only one who can find him through their shared connection. And she realizes that she faces far greater problems than Geometry tests or boyfriend troubles – she has been betrayed by one of her most trusted and respected allies. The Series is set in the „House of Night“ - vampire high school - and is written for young adults. Zoey faces all the typical problems for her age – boyfriend troubles, a forbidden attraction to a teacher and adult vampire, sex (thinking about, but not not doing) rivalries with other students, clothes and cliques, problems with teachers. But added to that is the supernatural element, Zoey's special connection to the Goddess Nyx and to the elements. Don't plan to read one book of the series by itself, they ALL end as cliffhangers. You will either be left frustrated, not knowing how the story is going to end or you immediately have to read the next book in the series. Luckily so far 8 books have been published already and more are planned. It's best to read the books in order, they are completely chronological in order of publication and each story builds on the events of the previous books. It is very strongly a teeny book and I'm actually rather past that age. There were many passages (especially the worrying about sex, protecting innocent young readers from sexual practices perceived to be indecent or inappropriate) where I just thought I'm to old to be interested in that kind of petty problem. I have recently read other children's books that did not make me feel too old for the story, e. g. Harry Potter, Mercedes Lackey or Eoin Colfer. And as mentioned each of the books has a cliffhanger ending. Still the story managed to enthrall me and make me grab the next book of the series as soon as I had finished the previous one.

Inhalt: Zoey hat die Leitung der Dark Daughters übernommen. Ihre Feindin Aphrodite und deren Eltern sind darüber alles andere als glücklich, zumal Aphrodite auch von der Hohepriesterin Neferet geächtet und der Lüge bezichtigt wird. Zoey dagegen fühlt sich integriert, gemocht und geschätzt, nimmt ihre neue Rolle sehr ernst und möchte die Dark Daughters von Grund auf umstrukturieren. Ganz nebenbei ist Zoey ob ihrer zahlreichen Verehrer mehr als verwirrt und erlebt ein Gefühlschaos nach dem anderen. Und schließlich muss sie erkennen, dass Dinge oft nicht so sind, wie sie im ersten Moment scheinen. Mein Eindruck: Betrayed gefällt mir um einiges besser als Marked. Zwar finden sich noch immer Parallelen zu Harry Potter, die ich als sehr störend empfinde, aber die Geschichte um Zoey und das House of Night hat sich zu einer spannenden Geschichte entwickelt. Gefallen hat mir vor allem, dass die Charaktere nicht mehr nur als gut oder böse dargestellt werden, sondern sich als vielschichtiger entpuppen. Etwas genervt haben mich die ständigen Wiederholungen und der esoterische/spirituelle/mystische Einschlag. Mein Resümee: Alles in allem handelt es sich bei Betrayed um ein unterhaltsames und kurzweiliges Buch, das Lust auf den nächsten Teil macht.
