The School of Night is a brooding, slow-burn descent into obsession, memory, and the murky edges of identity. Knausgård does what he does best: he builds a world that feels both intensely intimate and strangely vast, where the mundane rubs shoulders with the mythic. The prose is deliberate and atmospheric, drawing you forward even when the characters resist easy sympathy. What’s most striking is how the narrative holds you in its grip despite — or perhaps because of — an ambivalent, often unlikeable main character. Knausgård uses this distance to create tension, complexity, and a sense of emotional truth that lingers long after the final page. In the end, I was genuinely surprised at how deeply I slipped into this story; I could have read on and on — something that almost never happens when the protagonist frustrates me as much as this one did.
