Demokratie kann durch musikalische Darbietungen symbolisch eingefordert oder konsolidiert werden, denn Musik ist eine mögliche Praxis, um die Aushandlungsprozesse, was unter »Demokratie« verstanden wird, zu gestalten, zu begleiten oder zu kommentieren. Der Band nimmt diese Fragen aus verschiedenen europäischen Perspektiven in den Blick. In den Beiträgen wird deutlich, dass Demokratie oder demokratisches Handeln durch historische wie kulturelle Diversität unterschiedlich gelebt und musikalisch praktiziert wird.
Music and democracy are both abstract and invisible phenomena. People have always used music to advocate for democracy. Music therefore provides an analytical framework for both political action and the question of how democracy can be realised. Democracy is associated with numerous values such as freedom, justice and humanism, which are constantly being renegotiated. It is understood as a form of government, society and way of life, and varies accordingly depending on the time period, culture and country. Democracy can be symbolically demanded or consolidated through musical performances, because music is a possible practice for shaping, accompanying or commenting on the negotiation processes of what is understood by ‘democracy’. This volume examines these questions from various perspectives in Europe. It becomes clear that democracy or democratic acting is understood, lived and practised musically in different ways due to historical and cultural diversity.
