John William Polidori (1795-1821) was Lord Byron's personal physician, hired to accompany him on his trip through Europe. His personal diary, supplemented by some letters, recounts his stay with Byron, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, and Claire Clairmont during the summer of 1816 in Switzerland. That summer was marked by bad weather (the effect of the eruption of the Tambora volcano), which confined the writers to Villa Diodati and gave rise to long literary evenings. From these emerged the seed of Frankenstein (Mary Shelley) and the story The Vampire, by Polidori himself, considered the first modern vampire story, a character indirectly inspired in this case by Byron. In his diary, Polidori describes Byron's dominant personality and charisma, but also his arrogance and contemptuous treatment of him. The doctor often feels humiliated, which fuels tensions between the two. This is the first time that Polidori's complete diary has been published in Spanish.
