Moving between a 1990s childhood in upstate New York and an expatriate adulthood in France, The Heartbreakers follows Becky as she tries to build a life beyond the family that formed her. Her childhood appears ordinary: routines hold, authority is accepted, and affection is practical. Yet beneath that surface lies a system organised around silence, addiction and loyalties no one is willing to name.
As Becky grows older, the pressures within the family begin to shape her own choices. She escapes first through self-destruction, then through distance, eventually creating a life in Paris with a husband, children and work that belongs entirely to her. For a time, geography offers the control she has always wanted. The past remains contained across an ocean.
But distance becomes harder to maintain. Emails, mobile phones and early video calls make everyone reachable, allowing old hierarchies to reassert themselves inside the life Becky has carefully constructed. When illness draws her back, she must confront not only what happened, but the family's enduring refusal to explain, apologise or change.
The Heartbreakers is a literary novel about family systems, addiction, memory and the uneasy inheritance of silence. It asks what we carry forward when apologies never come, whether escape can ever be complete, and what happens when the place we left behind still insists on a claim. At its centre is one woman's struggle to decide whether belonging means returning, forgiving, or finally choosing to remain gone on terms she has defined for herself and her children.
