This is the story of the woman at the center of that session a Cincinnati-born dancer who came up on the hard road of Black vaudeville, became a Harlem headliner commanding thousands of dollars a night, and then watched the very market she'd proven exist fill with singers whose deeper, rawer blues voices came to be seen as more "authentic" than her own. It's the story of a fortune made and lost, a second act built in the margins of the film industry, and a grave that sat unmarked for decades after her death.
Mamie Smith has gone down in history as a footnote the answer to a trivia question about "firsts." Crazy Blues argues she deserves to be remembered as something more: the performer whose voice, for three minutes and twenty-six seconds, changed what American music believed about its own audience.
