A Patriarch and His Family in the Early Republic: The Papers of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, 1782-1832

Ronald Hoffman (1941-2018) served as director of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture (1992-2013); as Editor-in-Chief of a seven-volume, selective letterpress edition of the papers of Charles Carroll of Carrollton--Dear Papa, Dear Charley (University of North Carolina Press, 2001) and A Patriarch and His Family in the Early Republic (Maryland Center for History and Culture, 2026); and as a professor of American history at the University of Maryland, College Park, and the College of William & Mary. He is the author of A Spirit of Dissension: Economics, Politics, and the Revolution in Maryland (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1973) and Princes of Ireland, Planters of Maryland (University of North Carolina Press, 2000), and co-editor of the volumes of essays produced by a fourteen-year bicentennial conference series for the United States Capitol Historical Society (1978-1992), which he helped organize.

Mary Clement Jeske is co-editor of a four-volume edition of the papers of Charles Carroll of Carrollton--A Patriarch and His Family in the Early Republic: The Papers of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, 1782-1832 (Maryland Center for History and Culture, 2026). She is currently working on a history of the families enslaved by the Carroll family from the early eighteenth century until the Civil War.

Sally D. Mason's association with manuscripts related to Charles Carroll of Carrollton began with her positions as researcher and catalogue essayist for the Baltimore Museum of Art's 1975 bicentennial exhibition "Anywhere So Long As There Be Freedom" Charles Carroll of Carrollton, His Family, and His Maryland. She subsequently worked with Dr. Ronald Hoffman on the Carroll Papers editorial project from its formal inception in 1978 and served as Associate Editor of the edition's first three volumes, Dear Papa, Dear Charley: The Papers of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, 1748-1782 (University of North Carolina Press, 2001). Following Dr. Hoffman's death in 2018, she became co-editor with Dr. Mary Clement Jeske of the final four volumes, A Patriarch and His Family in the Early Republic: The Papers of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, 1782-1832 (Maryland Center for History and Culture, 2026). Her published work focuses on the roles Carroll women played in their family's history. Mason collaborated with Dr. Hoffman on his monograph Princes of Ireland, Planters of Maryland: A Carroll Saga, 1500-1782, (University of North Carolina Press, 2000).
