Four of the shorter works of Saint Augustine, written across the whole of his life, that together trace the road of the soul to God through faith and love. The Soliloquies, composed soon after his conversion, are a dialogue between Augustine and his own Reason on the knowledge of God and of the soul, and on the truth that cannot die. On the Profit of Believing, written to a friend still held by the Manichees, shows that faith must go before understanding, and that the authority of the Church is a surer road to truth than proud reason alone. Of the Morals of the Catholic Church teaches that the whole of virtue is nothing but the love of God, and that the four cardinal virtues are but four forms of that single love. And the Enchiridion, the handbook of his maturity written for a Roman named Laurentius, sets out the sum of the Christian religion under three heads: faith, hope, and love.
