This book brings together some of the essays we have written over the forty years we have devoted to the history of Fez. The first of these were published in an anthology titled *Medieval Fez*, which we had the pleasure of coordinating. We have slightly revised them. As for the others-the essay on the Portefaix, the one on the saga of the Sufis, the one on Maliki jurisprudence, and the one on the great families of Fez, as well as the essay on the culture, knowledge, and spirituality of Fez, and finally the article on Berber identity in Fez culture-these were published, in part, in the collective volume *Fez: The Soul of Morocco*. The final article, which deals with Fatima al-Fihriya, the founder of the Great Mosque-University of al-Qarawiyyin, was presented in a paper at the most recent symposium in Fez-organized by an association affiliated with the Fez Faculty of Medicine-on Arab knowledge and medicine. These texts do not claim to be academic. We have not employed the critical methods necessary for establishing facts and events, nor have we analyzed the texts, nor have we included footnotes.
