Henry Fielding's History of Tom Jones, a Foundling begins with a child whose origins are unknown and a household in which different people quickly decide what his future ought to be. Mr Allworthy's generosity gives Tom a place in that world, but it cannot protect him from jealousy, suspicion, or his own mistakes.
