I've already read this book about ten years ago, now I thought it's time to read it again. It's just every bit as good as I remember it. Its mixture of adventure and crime is absolutely gripping and the surprisingly profound bits of wisdom offered are never tacky or superficial. It feels very real and raw and is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. Takes your mind off of things and opens it at the same time.

Shantaram has an interesting and grounded true story about a criminal and his redemption far from home, which the author fails to tell in a manner that keeps you interested. It starts in a tone that keeps you wondering if it can maintain the energy, but soon enough it disappoints with its long and boring scene descriptions, which sometimes take so much time to explain that the main narrative becomes somewhat forgotten. After about 200–300 pages, it gains speed again and delivers an action-packed finale, which I found satisfying. Unfortunately, the adapted series is not recommendable.
