Mit ihrem zweiten Buch setzt Naomi Novik die spannende Reise von Termeraire und Capitain Laurence fort.
In China hat man erfahren, dass nicht Napoleon das Ei des Drachen Termeraire erhalten hat, sondern ein einfacher Marine-Kapitän sich dessen "bemächtigt" hat. Daraufhin interveniert China. Termeraire und Captian Laurence müssen sich auf eine lange und gefährliche Reise nach China begeben, bei der Intriegen nicht die kleinste Rolle spielen.
Auch der zweite Teil ist bis zum Schluss spannend und fesselnd.
