I never expected this book to grab my attention as much as it did. 39 women and one girl are trapped in a cell, watched by guards without knowing the reason and without knowing where they are. Escape seems impossible. As the reader you get pulled into the story by feeling the same hopefulness as the protagonist, who is starving for something new and has a yearning to learn but is also disconnected from everyone else, because she knows nothing outside of this cell. It's a slow and melancholic read that lingers long after you're done reading.

The nameless narrator of "I Who Have Never Known Men" grew up as one of 40 women trapped in a cage. They don´t know where they are, and they barely have any memories of being taken into captivity. Our narrator is the only member of the group who´s described as a child, though her actual age is unknown. One day, the women manage to escape their bunker and begin their journey. This is one of those books that wants you to really think about it - there´s a lot of hints of information, but not a lot that´s really spelled out, and questions just keep piling up the longer the story goes on. A fascinating read and a book that, in my opinion, should be considered a modern classic.
