Black Sun

All PoV characters are a pleasure to read about. They behave so humanly and that does include frustratingly too, just not so frustratingly that it would mess with the enjoyableness of the story. Roanshorse's pre-Columbus fantasy world is a treat to explore. She invites us into a world inhabitated by indigenous thought of what is today Mexico and New Mexico, US and that includes for the German audience to learn something new. I throughoutly enjoyed this book and am excited to finish the trilogy over the next weeks as weekends reads.

Das Buch ist spannend und die Charaktere sind lebhaft, mit glaubwürdig menschlichen Schwächen. Insbesodere die Charaktere und die Fantasywelt sind erfrischend anders, als die normalerweise sehr mitteleuropäisch / mittelalterlich angehauchten Fanatasywelten von Der Herr der Ringe und Game of Thrones. Black Sun ist stark von den präkolonialistischen Kulturen Südamerikas, insbesondere der Maya und Inca, inspiriert. Dies hat natürlich zur Folge, dass auch die Namensgebung an die indigenen Sprachen angelehnt ist und für Leser "normaler" Fantasy ein bisschen Eingewöhnung bedarf. Besonders für das phänomenale World-Building und die mögenswerten, menschlich fehlerhaften Charaktere ist dieses Buch absolut lesenswert!

I gave it 3 chances but no it was just horrible. The author seems to have used 100s of random generated words to name things. I see the inclusivity is the reason for the book to do so well but I really couldn’t keep my head in the books with so many pronouns (some I never heard of like Xie) which took me out of the story. Just use pronouns without distracting the action seen. I was sometimes confused about who were being referred too. Dnf 57 page in.
