Rezension

Zen Cho's brilliant and distinct voice brings worlds to life on the page. A sharp and bittersweet story of past and future, ghosts and gods and family, that kept me turning pages into the dark hours of the night Naomi Novik, author of Uprooted

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

"A stressed lesbian medium fights gods, ghosts, gangsters and grandmas in 21st century Penang"

... is what this book gets tagged. I think that's pretty accurate. It perfectly summarises the messiness and utter chaos of this novel (in the best way) and the "stressed lesbian" part fits the MC very well. While I don't think this book is perfect, i did really enjoy it and loved especially the contemporay elements of family and malaysian culture. You get a very good insight into the protagonists life and how stressful it is for her to balance personal carrier plans. family expectaions, being queer and closeted... and of course the plot of the book. And it never felt unrelealistic or too much but very carefully handled. The book aside from that was just a lot of fun and a total page turner. The grandma was the best, the ghosts were both spooky but also deeply human and the themes were relatable and reflective of mordern day society. The only issue I had with this book, was that the plot at times went a bit crazy for my taste - so much so that I felt a bit overwhelmed and almost left behind by what was going on. Still, I highly recommend picking this up, it's definitely worth it.
