Das war das erste Buch von Kingfisher, das ich gelesen habe und mir hat der Schreibstil sofort gefallen. Ich kannte die Originalgeschichte von Edgar Allan Poe nur vom Titel her und habe sie (bisher) nicht gelesen, aber man muss sie auch nicht kennen, um Spaß an dem Buch zu haben. Es ist spannend und ein bisschen gruselig, aber eher klassischer Horror. Kein Blutbad, keine extremen Geschehnisse - der Horror ist eher unterschwellig und geht unter die Haut (pun intended). Ich bin auf die Geschichte aufmerksam geworden, weil ich Bücher gesucht habe, die thematisch zu "The Last of Us" passen und habe mittlerweile noch mehr Bücher der Autorin bestellt, weil sie mich absolut überzeugt hat!

What moves the dead is based on the short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe. The protagonist is Alex Easton, a retired soldier, who visits their childhood friend Madeline. Soon, they find the house in decay, their friend obviously dying and living at the same time, and the strangest hares ever seen. And what about all these fungi? I absolutely love Alex and their horse Hob. Kingfisher's writing style is excellent. All in all one fantastic read.

Edgar Ellen Poe meets The Last of Us

T. Kingfisher must have had a lot of self-confidence to write this book if she thought she could add anything to the work of Edgar Ellen Poe - the giant, the king of gothic horror. Because this book is a retelling of Poe's story "The Fall of the House of Usher". And - god damn - she delivers! She expands Poe's story in a meaningful and horrifying way, that - and I would not have believed it - actually makes it even better. She answers some questions left unanswered in Poe's story, adding new, almost creepier questions. The story is also charmingly enhanced with some queerness in the form of a non-binary narrator.
