Interesting characters, disappointing adaptation

Bewertung am 30.05.2026

Bewertungsnummer: 3153544

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

First of all, this book is well written and it was a pleasant read. The characters are interesting and well-rounded, making the love story between Oliver and Darcy very enjoyable. I was disappointed by the adaptation. Apart from the characters' names and the general existence of balls and gowns for the Regency Era vibes this felt nothing like an Austen novel. The characters were all aged down, Darcy's "pride" is easily and quickly explained by his queerness and Oliver's "prejudice" is basically non-existent because the main conflict between them is solved after roughly 70 pages. To me, the book would have been much more enjoyable if the author had simply written a book about a trans man falling in love with a friend while struggling through the period-typical transphobia. The vague references to Pride & Prejudice do nothing for the plot and constantly threw me off

The first book that managed to make my heart flutter and got me to giggle like a lovestruck teen! It's now a favorite book of mine! Oliver and Darcy just have such a wonderful, tender love story that it's hard not to be swept up in it!

A diverse Pride and Prejudice Retelling!!

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Most Ardently is part of the classic remixed series, in which authors from marginalized backgrounds reinterpret classic works through their own cultural lens to subvert the overwhelming cishet, white, and male canon. We follow Oliver Bennet, the trans main character, who yearns to live freely and openly in society's patriarchal and cisheteronormative expectations. I don't envy anyone who is given the rask to rewrite Jane Austen, but I found Novoa captures the ratio between the original text while also having some feeling of originality. He also captures the original personalities of the characters while addressing social issues that were relevant to Oliver. Although Novoa took some liberties in the text, I appreciate the historical aspects he wobei into it. There is also a good balance between the transphobia and homophobia and the endearing and cute romance and friendships.
