Nach langem Warten ist es nun da, das neue Buch von R. F. Kuang: Katabasis. Es ist kein Roman, den man einfach wegliest, sondern vielmehr zieht er einen tief hinein, in die dunkle, faszinierende Welt von Cambridge und noch tiefer, in die Unterwelt. Kuang verwebt akademischen Ehrgeiz, Mythologie und Machtspiele zu einer dichten, atmosphärischen Geschichte. Alice Law, die ehrgeizige Doktorandin, ist keine einfache Figur. Manchmal kühl, manchmal verzweifelt, selten wirklich sympathisch, aber immer faszinierend! Ihre Reise durch die Hölle ist weniger ein Abenteuer als eine Abrechnung mit dem akademischen System und den eigenen Grenzen. Das Worldbuilding ist stark: Kuang zeichnet Bilder, die sich einbrennen: neblige Innenhöfe, alte Bücher, glühende Tore zur Unterwelt. Gleichzeitig stellt sie große Fragen: Was sind wir bereit zu opfern, um anerkannt zu werden? Wo endet Ehrgeiz und wo beginnt Selbstzerstörung? “Katabasis“ ist klug, vielschichtig und sprachlich präzise. Kein leichtes, aber ein intensives Leseerlebnis für alle, die Dark Academia mit Tiefe lieben. 4 von 5 Sternen.

Sadly a little disappointing

I´ve enjoyed everything R.F.Kuang has written to this date - The Poppy War trilogy, Babel and Yellowface. I also like Dante´s Inferno, so I was obviously super excited when Katabasis was announced - a journey to Hell, written by an author I really like. Sadly, I didn´t quite warm up to the book. In Babel, the facts about translation and linguistics where placed as foot notes to the main story, but in Katabasis, they´re right there in the texts, breaking up the flow of the story. I did like reading about Alice as a character, even though she´s not necessarily the most likable character - but I also don´t think she´s supposed to be. However, I didn´t like Peter at all, I found him to be not only unlikable but also quite boring. I also liked some of the side characters, like Elspeth and Archimedes, and the vibe of the story as a whole, but overall, I was pretty disappointed by Katabasis, especially considering the wait and the hype I had.
