„Ivanhoe“ ist neben dem „Don Quijote“ der wohl bekannteste Ritterroman. Gegen Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts kehren Wilfred von Ivanhoe und Richard Löwenherz von einem Kreuzzug nach England zurück. Dort haben die Normannen das Szepter übernommen und liegen im Clinch mit den Angel-Sachsen. Überrascht hat mich die Aktualität des 1820 erschienenen Romans.
Die Unterdrückung im eigenen Land ist in nahezu allen Ländern der Welt ein teilweise beherrschendes Thema. Mir war der historische Hintergrund in England nicht bekannt.
Ebenso erstaunt war ich darüber, dass Scott die Ausgrenzung der Juden zur Debatte stellt. Man kann „Ivanhoe“ als Nachfolger Lessings Nathan der Weise lesen. Im Hexenprozeß gegen Rebecca wird ein Gottesgericht angerufen. Tatsächlich tritt ganz am Ende Ivanhoe auf um die Sache für die Jüdin auszufechten. So gelesen, ist Wagners Lohengrin ein Nachfolger von Ivanhoe (und Richard Wagner hätte den Roman über Richard Löwenherz und Ivanhoe sorgfältiger lesen sollen).
Von einigen Längen abgesehen also ein hochaktueller Roman mit den Themen der (Un)Gerechtigkeit zwischen den Völkern, Volksgruppen und Religionen. Gelegentlich auch witzig erzählt.
