Rezension

"Holly demonstrates that one of the last true rock stars of fiction can continue to grow as a writer, and doesn't define success solely as a continuation of what's worked for him before." -The Washington Post

"Stephen King does something amazing in his new novel, HOLLY... King's storytelling skills are not dimming one bit." -Tampa Bay Times

"Hugely successful... Holly surely deserves further episodes in the spotlight." - Portland Press Herald

"Holly has a thrilling finish, in which our heroine looks horror in the face. The outcome is most satisfying." -St Louis Post-Dispatch

"What makes King's work so much more frightening than that of most other suspense writers, what elevates it to night-terror levels, isn't his cruelty to his characters: It's his kindness." -Flynn Berry, New York Times Book Review

"Both intimate and sprawling in its ambitions... Holly is the imperfect but determined angel among all those demons..." -Brian Truitt, USA Today

"Holly is the heart of the narrative. Her growth from a shy, muttering mess in Mr. Mercedes to the smart, strong, smoking, slightly better, and much richer woman we see in Holly is tremendous. Please, Mr. King, give us more Holly soon." -Gabino Iglesias, NPR.org

"In half a century of writing horror novels, Stephen King has created some remarkable villains. Who can forget the sing-song voice of Pennywise the clown, the devil incarnate Randall Flagg, or the drooling jaws of Cujo? The big bads in King's latest novel, Holly, aren't quite so memorable, but that's part of what makes them terrifying." -Rob Merrill, Associated Press

"A deadly folie a deux... Holly pursues this case to the gates of hell, figuratively-there's no supernatural element in this powerful exploration of grief and delusion, just pure, undistilled evil." -New York Magazine

    Spannend

    Holly, you rock.

In my opinion, Holly Gibney deserves to get her own story. So far she has more or less had a supporting role and in this book, Stephen King has brought her to life. The character has been given more depth, anyone who has found Holly unimpressive will change their mind after this one. The little grey mouse develops into a strong personality. I am very impressed by the story itself, even if it quickly becomes clear where the plot might lead. Nevertheless, it was interesting to follow how the individual storylines develop, and the time jumps contribute to this. Let’s hope that this is not King’s last work.

    Good bye Mr. King

Gut wrenching disappointment is the best way I can describe how I feel after having painfully finished reading Holly. Stephen King's stories have been a part of my life for the last forty years or so, and I am saddened to say that it will end here. There are two things that prompted me to make this hard decision. First off, the story line in Holly is nothing but a basic B series detective novel, nothing much to it. Stephen King wrote so many great books, The Stand, The Shining, The Tommyknockers, just to name a few, but Holly is just not one of them. Second, and that is what I mainly find so offending, is that Stephen King uses this book to go on a rant against people opposed to Covid measures, Trump supporters, racism, and even some digs at veganism. Stephen King, the man, can do and think as he pleases, I have no problems with that. Stephen King, the writer, however, cannot just do and say as he pleases. He must write a coherent story, sure, but first and foremost, he must respect his readers, and in this case, he does not. Mr. King has disrespected the very fans who have made him a wealthy man, and I am truly shocked at this. There were a few digs at Trump in the last few releases, but they were nothing serious. But this, this is something else. He is relentless. It just doesn't end. He brings up Covid so many times, most often when it is just unnecessary to fit in with the plot. It is just ridiculous, and again, offending. I was not a fan of the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, but read the books anyway, and as I enjoy Stephen King's writing, I did enjoy them. I even grew to enjoy Holly as a character. But in this last release, I find her to be extremely unlikeable. She is so obsessed with Covid, and yet smokes cigarettes non-stop. It's just sad. I do not agree with Stephen Kings views, but I respect him for thinking what he thinks. I wish he had extended me and his fans the same courtesy. His agent and all of those who supported this tragedy should be ashamed of themselves for not knocking some sense into him and telling him to rethink what he wrote. So I say farewell, Mr. King. It has been a great ride and I am very sad it ends here. Really, I am.
