A beautifully layered story about ambition, sacrifice, and the many shapes love can take.

Daphne aus Bournemouth, UK am 03.05.2026

Bewertungsnummer: 3127107

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

A beautifully layered, twist‑filled story that explores love in all its forms — romantic, platonic, familial, and everything in between. Evelyn’s rise through old Hollywood is gripping, messy, and unforgettable, and the slow revelations kept me hooked from start to finish. I loved the complexity of her relationships, especially with Celia and Harry, and the way the book shows that love can be true even when it doesn’t fit the expected shape. A powerful, emotional read that stayed with me long after the final page.

Sapphic love in the glamour of old Hollywood

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

At an old age, Hollywood legend Evelyn Hugo has decided to have her eventful life story full of Hollywood movie-making, Love stories, and scandals recorded in a biography to be published after her death. So she tells her story to journalist Monique, who is in the middle of her own divorce. Evelyn's story is full of the glamour of Hollywood's golden age, her seven (failed) marriages, and the love of her life - fellow actress Celia St James. The novel feels like you are reading from all the confidence, glamour, and life experience of a real actress in her 70s. The prose is wonderfully written and the dialogue is incredibly funny or sassy now and then. Evelyn's narration of the raw truth is contrasted by newspaper articles that show us the perception of Evelyn's scandalous life. Evelyn has many flaws, which she reflects on in old age - especially putting her acting career above all else, including her love for Celia. The sapphic love between Evelyn and Celia is beautifully told in all its highs and lows, ons and offs. Evelyn is an incredibly complex character whose radiance is not limited to the life of her biographer. She is thus the best stubborn, wilful, assertive, bitchy, and ruthless bisexual representation I could have wished for.

Magnificent and heartbreaking!

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Ever wondered how the inside world of a promi looks like? This book is for you! I saw the cover and just kept asking myself why seven husbands? Why did Evelyn Hugo marry seven times? It seemed odd, maybe even unusual. But with every chapter you will understand the reason more. Evelyn Hugo will tell you her story and you definetely will be captivated and stunned. And the plot twist? I didn't see that coming. It was just so amazing but so heartbreaking! I recommend it with all my heart.
