I loved it

A love story with plot twist and real historical aspects. Also loving that medicine takes a part in the story. This book got me laughing & crying. I really loved both books so much.

„There are always women behind the scenes, pulling the strings, Hazel. We are invisible to history, but we also survive.“ Still grieving the loss of her beloved Jack, Hazel is once again on her own. Treating the sick and writing her book are the only things that bring her comfort and meaning. Until she is thrown in jail, that is. It’s only when she thinks that all hope is lost, that she is finally released – under the condition to become the personal physician of the king’s sickly daughter. Hopelessness and despair are followed by the glitz and glamour of the royal court and a mysterious secret society… „Immortality“ is the more than worthy sequel to Dana Schwartz‘ „Anatomy“ and just as enjoyable to read. It is quite different, though. To me, it felt less dark than the first book - apart from Hazel’s stint in prison, of course. There is way less blood and fewer dead bodies and the setting changes from Edinburgh to London. The fantastic elements of the series are also more apparent and it becomes obvious that we find ourselves in an alternate history kind of setting. I really enjoyed reading about Hazel’s new assignment, the secret society and loved the way the author made historical figures her own. The new characters introduced in this book are great additions and make the story more diverse, fun and serious all at the same time. Also, the way politics plays a not so small role in this installment was really interesting to me. Since it wasn’t quite clear what happened to Jack at the end of the first book, I was a bit anxious until that particular question was finally addressed and I have to say that I really loved the way it was resolved. The ending was quite satisfying as well, which I appreciate. If you love reading stories about tough female protagonists that are ahead of their time, enjoy alternate history settings or are simply looking for something with a gothic feel to it, you should definitely read this series.
