The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

Amazing

It's been a long time since I had so much fun with a book! I am simply in awe of Muir's writing, it's just exquisite! The description doesn't do the book justice - whatever you expect to find, I can guarantee that you will find so much more in it. Highly recommend.

I picked up Gideon the Ninth after finishing one of the books I was struggling with and now I'm just struggling with disbelief that it took me so long to get to it??? I love love love this so much. Gideon is perfectly snarky, the writing is the perfect mix of intriguing and relatable (and stupidly funny, oh my god, I'm dying here) and I am just in awe. I went into this expecting something along the lines of Garth Nix's necromancy (you know, waking the dead, putting them to rest, bells on a bandolier, sword librarians, that sort of thing) and this is very much not it. But. I love it. Sword lesbians are even better than sword librarians (uhm, somebody give me lbgt+ sword librarians and I might just bake you a cake) and the mystery of Canaan House is really fascinating. Also adore how this is both old-timey and super modern in terms of worldbuilding, which is very different from the usual setting of some sort of Victorian steampunk era or hyperfuturistic space shenanigans.
